With two straight promotions under his leadership, the Suffolk club is expected to play in the top division for the first

time in 22 years next season. McKenna, 38, has presided over an amazing rise.

After being linked to the Chelsea position last month, the Northern Irishman decided to sign a new four-year contract at Portman Road.

“Retaining him is crucial,” Morsy stated to BBC Sport.

“It was widely reported that he had the opportunity to attend some prestigious clubs, yet he has nevertheless made

history here. It’s good that he’ll be traveling with us, and it would have been unfortunate if he hadn’t.

“In the end he has probably thought he has played a huge role in it and we are thankful he can carry on.”

McKenna has built ‘competitive culture’

Over McKenna’s two full seasons at Ipswich, his team has scored 92 goals in the Championship and 101 in League One, playing an expansive brand of football that has helped them advance after finishing second in two straight seasons.

They placed higher in the table than teams like Leeds United and Southampton, but the Saints’ promotion to the Premier League came via their triumph in the Play-Off final.

The accomplishments have elevated the former Manchester United manager McKenna to a highly esteemed and

sought-after position in the English game, garnering him the manager of the year award from the League Managers Association.

“A really competitive culture of ownership, where everyone has a voice and togetherness, has been built by the manager

and staff,” Morsy continued.

“We consider that we have put a lot of effort into all we do and have always sought to get better.

“We have persevered, remained courageous, and carried out the task correctly. Considering that we finished ahead of

some heavyweights in the division, it is an amazing accomplishment. Doing back-to-backs is amazing.”
