£100M DEAL: Anthony Gordon finally confirms, makes things clear on leaving Newcastle United

Anthony Gordon left Everton in January 2023 to sign for Newcastle United but has been

linked with making the switch to Premier League rivals Liverpool in recent weeks

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has hailed the Anfield effect,

naming Liverpool’s home as the best atmosphere he has played in aside from St James’ Park.

Gordon has so far experienced two trips to Anfield as an opposition player,

one of which arrived at Everton and the other coming on New Year’s Day with current club Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old was not a popular figure during his maiden trip to L4 after receiving a yellow

card for diving during the first half and later going to ground inside the penalty area after minimal contact from Joel Matip.

Gordon took to X (formerly Twitter) after the match to express his disbelief over the decision.

Endearing himself to Reds supporters in more recent times, however,

the winger recently named Steven Gerrard as his favourite player growing up and

listed Mohamed Salah as a source of inspiration for his game.

Gordon went on to say that, aside from St. James’ Park,

Anfield has by far the best atmosphere he has ever seen on a football field when asked to describe it to Channel 4.

I believe that I grew up watching it because I’m from the city.

It’s on another level when they perform You’ll Never Walk Alone before the game.

The Daily Star recently revealed that Liverpool is considering a summer bid for the England international,

stating that “an offer close to £100million to seriously test Newcastle’s resolve” would be required.

Gordon began his career with the Reds but was released by the club at the age of 11 and joined city rivals, Everton.

It is believed he grew up supporting Liverpool, though this has not been confirmed for definite.

Of the opinion the forward would jump at the chance to sign for Arne Slot’s side,

former Reds right-back Glen Johnson told Betfred: “Players need to do what they need to do.

It’s his job at the end of the day and if Liverpool come calling, then a player’s going to be interested.

“You’re going to be interested if Liverpool come calling for you.

He’s a good player, but whether Liverpool need him is a different thing.

“When a player’s 11 years old, then people can get it wrong but if he feels as if he should have been at Liverpool,

then if they’re interested in him, he now knows he’s good enough because they want him back.

If their interest is real, he knows that he’s won them over.

Ultimately though, he’s a good player and Liverpool are a huge club, so I do believe Anthony would be interested in the move.”
