One of the first problems Russell Martin will need to deal with is Jan Bednarek. The Polish defender has one year remaining on his contract, so the decision will need to be made.

If he doesn’t sign a new contract, Southamptonfc.news suggests selling him right away.

Bednarek signed with Southampton in the summer of 2017, but he was sluggish to get going at first. He didn’t play in the League Cup until a month after signing,

and it took him five months to play again, this time in the FA Cup.

In fact, he would have to wait until April 2018 to make his League debut, and it would be a memorable one as he scored the second goal in a 3-2 loss to Chelsea.

He would play five times in the League under new manager Mark Hughes as Saints narrowly avoided relegation, but Hughes did not appear to like him the next season,

as he started just two League games before Hughes was fired in December 2018.

However, Bednarek’s luck turned when Ralph Hasenhuttl joined, and he would be a regular in the team for the remaining 2018–19 season as well as the next three.

However, he lost patience in the summer of 2022 and forced a loan transfer to Aston Villa. If he believed that would mark a turning point in his career, he would be mistaken;

he would only play three league games for Villa in addition to one more cup match before returning to St Mary’s in January 2023.

Bednarek revealed in November 2022 that his issues with mental health were the driving force behind the club’s forced shift.

In all honesty, he brought some steel to the table when he returned to a deeply troubled team, but the damage had been done and Saints were going to be demoted.

Given his problems from the previous season, it was believed that Bednarek would leave this summer, but no club seemed interested in signing him.

As a result, he stayed for the Championship season of 2023–2024 and once again established himself as a key member of the team.

What does Bednarek’s future contain going forward? Does he still believe that, at 28, the club is where his destiny rests, or will he once more get restless and consider other options?

From Southampton’s point of view, the question is whether he will sign a new contract; if he does, that is saying the obvious, but if not,

it is reasonable to claim that the team

When Russell Martin’s team resumes training in a few months, he will have choices when it comes to the center of defense. Armel Bella-Kotchap and

Duje Caleta-Car will both be returning from loan, and the manager will need to decide what to do with them.

With Jack Stephens able to play in the center, perhaps the Taylor Harwood-Bellis transaction goes through without a hitch.

Although Jack Stephens can play in the center, we may still be short on talent.

This implies that we would still need to add a central defender with Premier League experience as well as organizational and leadership skills,

even if Bednarek stays and the two players who were loaned out go, either permanently or on another loan.

First, though, there’s the matter of Jan Bednarek and whether or not he stays.
