Pedro Martinez was not pleased with Rafael Nadal and Pablo Carreno Busta’s selection to the Spanish team for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The Spanish person described the choice as “unfair” and “unjust.”

World No. 48 Martinez is currently ranked third among Spaniards competing on the ATP tour, behind only World No. 32 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz.

He would ideally be eligible for the 2024 Paris Olympics based on his ranking, with the French Open serving as the final qualifying event.

The 27-year-old, who is ranked in the top four men’s Spanish tennis players, hasn’t been selected for the singles team, though.

Rafael Nadal and Pablo Carreno Busta will be present at Stade Roland Garros in July alongside Alcaraz and Davidovich Fokina.

Both players are ranked World No. 275 and World No. 1049, respectively, and have missed the majority of 2023 due to injuries. They have gained their berth by using their protected ranking.

Carreno Busta and Rafael Nadal are both former Olympians. While the 22-time Grand Slam champion won gold twice, in singles in Beijing (2008) and doubles in Rio (2016), the latter took home the bronze in Tokyo. But Martinez wasn’t convinced.

Both former World No. 1s have enthusiastically stated that they would like to collaborate in the men’s doubles division in addition to their time as singles players.

“If everything goes well, we are going to play doubles together here,” Alcaraz stated at one of his press conferences during the current French Open.

Nadal expressed his “excitement” about the possibility as well, saying, “If everything goes according to plan, we’ll play.

For me, it’s also incredibly exciting. Rafael Nadal told Marca in April, “If my memory serves me correctly, I’ve heard it comes from him as well.

“I believe it makes sense if we are both physically capable. We might get the opportunity to work together as a fantastic team and achieve great things.”
