Sunderland interested in St Mirren boss as new manager update emerges

The Sun reports that Sunderland is considering a surprise approach for St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson.

If Sunderland is unable to sign top target Will Still to RC Lens, they may pursue the Scottish Premiership

player. Ahead of another season in the Championship, the Black Cats are still searching for Michael Beale’s

long-term replacement.

Robinson, 49, joined St. Mirren back in 2022 and has since performed admirably for them. In his time leading

the Buddies, he has won 34% of the games, and they may soon have to fight to hold onto him.

According to The Sun, he is currently associated with a shock switch that leads to the Stadium of Light over the border.

With 56 points earned during the previous season, Sunderland finished in 16th place in the standings and will

be looking to recruit a manager as soon as possible.

During his playing career, Robinson played midfield for a number of teams, including Preston North End,

Luton Town, AFC Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, and Bristol City. Sunderland is keeping an eye on the

new recruit.

After accumulating just about 450 appearances and seven caps for the Northern Ireland national side,

he then decided to hang up his boots in 2008.

The man from Lisburn began his coaching career with Motherwell, working under Ian Barraclough.

After that, Robinson worked for Northern Ireland, and in 2016, Oldham Athletic gave him his first coaching

position in the league.

Twelve months later, Motherwell called again, and he returned to Scotland, where he worked for three years in

the dugout at Fir Park.

In 2020, Morecambe enticed him back across the border, and he played with the Shrimps for eight months.

Robinson took over as St. Mirren’s head coach two years ago, and in that time, he has performed admirably

with the Paisley team, leading them to fifth place in the league this past season.

And what about Sunderland next?

If Sunderland can’t hire a manager quickly, they could regress to league rivals.

Though it seems like Still is the man they desire, their chances of winning him are slim.

Now that Robinson‘s name has surfaced, there would be a stir if he were to take the position.
