Confirmed:West Ham Striker to join Sunderland on personal terms
Why West Ham striker is set to leave amid reported Sunderland interest and contract impasse
Divin Mubama, the striker for West Ham, is reportedly of interest to Sunderland.
Would the Black Cats be wise to sign him?
After his contract expires this summer, the 19-year-old is expected to depart the London Stadium after allegedly
declining a fresh offer. Although Mubama has made eighteen senior appearances for the Hammers, in the
Premier League during the 2023–24 season, he only made five appearances off the bench.
We spoke with James Jones of the We Are West Ham Podcast to learn more about the player’s circumstances.
What is Mubama’s performance at West Ham?
JJ: “The supporters first thought he would be the solution to West Ham’s much-publicized striker curse when
he first began making an impact on the first team. There was a lot of enthusiasm surrounding him because at
West Ham, we love an academy product. Our academy has always been very good. However, the buzz
surrounding him from the club and others who were routinely monitoring him for the development squad
didn’t exactly match his game time.
That was partially caused by David Moyes‘ mistrust of young people. Although Obama was never given the
chance to prove himself, I believe that when he did play, there was a general perception that he wasn’t quite as
talented as many had claimed for the position we needed him to be at.
Why did he decline a new contract with West Ham?
JJ: “I believe that by declining it, he is acting appropriately. He was in and out of the first team squad, and the
only genuine opportunities he had were when he started in European cup or FA Cup early rounds, or in
meaningless matches against very bad clubs.
