BREAKING NEWS: Ally McCoist finally appointed as Sunderland’s new manager – Fabrizio Romano confirms

Martin Bain, the Sunderland supremo, has one person at the top of his list for the new boss: ALLY McCOIST.

McCoist, a former striker for the Black Cats, has been out of management for a few years after being fired by Rangers, but Bain believes he can keep them in the Championship.

At Rangers, Bain and McCoist collaborated, and they have a tight relationship. Giving the Scot the position, meanwhile, would be a major risk given that he has never worked in England.

But Bain might even enlist Walter Smith, a different former Rangers manager, to serve as a senior consultant.

A decade ago, Smith was Everton’s manager. Bain and he are now strong allies, having lately become close friends.

It’s a significant request for Bain, who has faced criticism from supporters over the decline in the team’s performance since he became CEO.

Ellis Short, the owner, is still not persuaded by the decision. In addition, he has been consulting with others regarding the post.

Aitor Karanka and Paul Lambert have had approaches from Sunderland, but neither appears interested in taking on the role at this challenging moment.

There is also a lobby for a popular appointment like Peter Reid or Kevin Phillips while caretakers Billy McKinlay and Robbie Stockdale have ambitions to stay on.
