After his move from Fratton collapsed,
he served AC Milan, Roma, and Atletico Madrid before being signed by Blackburn Rovers. T
his week, the striker decided to hang up his boots.
He was the subject of the transfer scandal that had no positive conclusion because Pompey blew up.
The striker scheduled to arrive at Fratton Park in July 2009 and lead
the Blues to their eighth Premier League season was Nikola Kalinic.
Rather, the man who terminated his playing career this week ended up at
Blackburn and went on to have a fantastic career at the top of the game, while the Blues collapsed.
But fifteen years ago, when Peter Crouch was leaving for £10 million to join Spurs,
one of Europe’s bright, young things—the man known as The Condor—was about to fill his shoes.
With a £5.5 million fee agreed upon with his club Hajduk Split, Kalinic
had even gone on trial for a week at Pompey’s Eastleigh training camp.
However, a deal never went through, with “financial reasons” cited as the main reason the move fell through.
We are all aware of what transpired when Sulaiman Al-take Fahim’s takeover was finished with money the following month.

It was then verified that he had stolen from his wife, and in 2018 he was given a five-year prison sentence.
His disastrous six-week tenure preceded the enigmatic Ali al-Faraj and subsequent Balram Chainrai taking over,
with Pompey emerging as the inaugural Premier League team to enter administration.
In the meantime, Kalinic escaped harm’s way and showed up at Ewood Park with a four-year, £6 million contract.
Before moving to Ukrainian team Dnipro, where the goals came easily,
the 36-year-old went on to score 15 goals in two campaigns at the highest level.
Kalinic joined Fiorentina in Italy and later served some of the biggest names in the game before moving to AC Milan.
The 42-cap international then played for Roma and Atletico Madrid in La Liga before joining Hellas Verona.
His announcement of retirement this week came after two more years with the club where he began his career,
Split, where he is going to become their sporting director.
“Thanks to everyone at the club who made it possible for me to be the sports director of such a big club,
” he stated of his position with Hajduk Split.
