The legendary American tennis player John McEnroe calls it “laughable” to believe that Novak Djokovic requires a full-time coach to succeed on the court.

After choosing to split from his six-year coach Goran Ivanisevic, Djokovic briefly collaborated with Nenad Zimonjic, the former doubles world No. 1; at the French Open, he is currently accompanied by Boris Bosnjakovic.

In addition to trying to retain his title, Djokovic hopes to capture his first title of the year at Roland Garros.

Even if Djokovic hasn’t played well since parting ways with Ivanisevic, he wasn’t playing well at the beginning of the season either, even with a full-time coach occupying his box.

Despite having a difficult 2024 season, Djokovic has prevailed in back-to-back straight-set victories over Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Roberto Carballes Baena to get through his opening two matches at the French Open.

Regarding his need for a coach, I find that absurd. I don’t think he needs someone to teach him what to do on the court, McEnroe stated on Eurosport.

It’s okay if he wants someone to be nearby. It’s worked incredibly well because nobody could have predicted that he would win 24 [Grand Slam titles]. When they were younger, I saw him play against Gael Monfils, and he won that match in five.

“I thought, ‘That kid Djokovic has some guts,’ but I would have told you were crazy if you had told me he would go on to win 24 Grand Slams.

He is now attempting to win more matches, and he had a great draw in the first two rounds. Two guys who had no chance in hell of beating him.”
