Ex- Leeds United defender suspended and ‘under investigation’ by club following alleged ‘hooligan’ incident
Current Malmo club Pontus Jansson, a former defender for Leeds United,
has been punished for reportedly
telling ‘hooligans’ where his team’s opponents were lodging the night before a game.
After being made aware of the circumstances, Jansson has consented to miss Saturday’s Allsvenskan match
against IF Brommapojkarna, according to Swedish publication Aftonbladet. According to reports, a
“preliminary investigation” reveals communication between the 33-year-old defender and a group of Malmo’s
“violent supporter.”
A violent altercation broke out between Malmo supporters and Djurgården fans last year, leading to several of
the latter being arrested and made to turn in their phones. Additionally, Jansson’s name surfaced in a group
conversation, and there are now claims that he revealed Elfsborg’s whereabouts to competitors prior to their
season-opening match.
According to a Malmo statement obtained by Aftonbladet, “Pontus Jansson has declared that he is remorseful
and that he feels affected by the situation that has arisen.” “Jansson will stand over this weekend’s match
against the Brommapojkarna, following consultation between the players and the association.”
According to the report, Elfsborg rescheduled their overnight stay and boarded a neutral bus after learning that
their location had been made public. Since then, Jansson has expressed regret for participating in the group
conversation, and an internal probe is currently underway.
In a statement made public by Aftonbladet, Jansson said, “Everyone knows that I have a great commitment to
Malmö FF and the support for the association and the team.” “I played in England when the results in 2022
failed, and I was subsequently invited to a discussion group where Malmö FF was discussed. I had only the best
of intentions when I set out to see if I could improve the team’s performance and foster greater support for the
group.I now see that I was in an inappropriate situation and shouldn’t have been there. I should have quit the
group last summer when I went back to Malmö FF, and I have done so now.
Jansson became a beloved figure at Elland Road during his three seasons at Leeds United, the first of which he
played on loan from Torino before making the transfer permanent. The Swedish international’s fierce
demeanor won him over supporters, and in Marcelo Bielsa’s debut season, he nearly played a key role in the
team that won promotion, only to fall short against Derby County in the play-off semifinals.
