According to sources in Australia, Ange Postecoglou, the coach of Australia, is considering taking over as manager of Glasgow Rangers, ESPN FC has learned.

It seems quite probable that Postecoglou will step down as Australia’s head coach following this week’s World Cup playoff match against Honduras, even if the Socceroos go to the Russia finals in the summer.

After four years as the Australia national team’s coach, the 52-year-old is looking to move into club management. Rangers may find him appealing as a free agent as early as next week.

The preferred candidate to succeed Caixinha is Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes, although Rangers would have to pay a substantial compensation fee if they were to select him.

Australia was led by Postecoglou to their first-ever Asian Cup victory in 2015, and he also led the team to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

After Pedro Caixinha was fired last month after just seven months in command at Ibrox, Rangers are looking for a new manager.
