The news that ITV and Sky Sports are apparently in negotiations over a £15 million

contract that would enable the free-to-air broadcaster to show up to 20

Carabao Cup and Championship events comes as a major relief to

Pompey supporters who want to watch every Blues EFL game next season.

After Sky reportedly struck a five-year agreement with

the EFL to transmit all of its fixtures outside of the Saturday 3pm blackout—roughly

1,000 matches a season—terrestrial broadcasters were apparently approached about a sub-licensing deal.

At the beginning of the 2024–2025 season, Sky’s record £935 million deal will go into force. Some games,

especially those scheduled outside of the Saturday 3pm slot and the EFL Cup ties, will be accessible on Sky’s linear channels.

The I daily claims that while Sky is eager to promote the EFL clubs and its own broadcast service more,

it is also hoping to increase revenue to offset the £935 million cost of the agreement.

According to reports, Sky had preliminary discussions with Channel 4 and Channel 5,

among other public service broadcasters, but ITV had the most alluring offer.

An additional benefit is that ITV is currently the EFL’s free-to-air highlights partner.

When Sky and BBC managed a successful joint bid for the rights between 2009 and 2012,

Pompey was in the Championship and fans could watch EFL matches on FTA platforms for the last time. BBc broadcast ten games.
