Will Still is out of the running to become Sunderland’s next manager, according to numerous stories throughout the evening.

Michael Walker, a freelance reporter at The Athletic,

had reported that the 31-year-old was concerned about staffing and investment at the Black Cats.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie revealed that the Belgium-born manager had began looking for a place to live in the north east.

According to Craig Hope of The Daily Mail and Roker Report,

Still decided to join the club five days ago.

But when RC Lens came knocking, the offer was too excellent to pass up,

especially given the allure of European football and a return to the country where he previously worked.

A relocation to the north of France appears to be progressing quickly,

with a deal reportedly agreed between the two parties.

It is a highly frustrating turn of events for the Championship club,

who originally looked into the former Reims manager in December following Tony Mowbray’s departure.

He was interviewed as part of the process to select the 60-year-old’s successor, but compensation was said to be a stumbling block.

Instead, Michael Beale was appointed for a brief and disastrous tenure,

and the team has been without a permanent manager ever since.

Sunderland’s play deteriorated dramatically in the second half of the season,

and when Mike Dodds took over as interim manager,

his record of nine points from thirteen games was the division’s second-lowest.

Several Play-Off charges came on the cards in the early stages of the  campaign,

before they eventually whimpered to a sixteenth-placed finish, seventeen points adrift of sixth place.

Still had been in talks with Norwich City, who ended their far shorter wait for a new manager yesterday.

After David Wagner was fired following Norwich City’s humiliating Play-Off Semi-Final defeat to Leeds United,

Johannes Hoff Thorup was named the club’s new manager.
