Update:Sunderland set for more misery ahead of transfer target’s preference

A Sunderland summer transfer target’s ‘preference’ has now been revealed, ahead of his contract expiry next month.

A handful of players are on Sunderland’s radar ahead of the June 14th opening of the summer transfer window

for 2024.

The Black Cats seem to be pursuing summer signings despite lacking a manager for more than three months;

Divin Mubama is another player on Kristjaan Speakman‘s roster.

Another is Josh Murphy, a 29-year-old winger who was connected to Southampton, West Brom, and

Sunderland early in the season.

Recently, Josh Murphy, the twin brother of Newcastle United player Jacob, led Oxford United to League One

promotion by scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley.

Although Murphy’s contract expires in June, Oxford United has disclosed via its retained list that they are

currently in contract negotiations with him.

“Preference” of Josh Murphy disclosed amid interest from Sunderland

John Murphy, the father of Murphy, disclosed his son Josh’s preference to Oxford Mail in advance of the

summer.

Josh’s son Aaro, who was born in October, and his excellent partner have made a big difference. Everything has

coincidentally aligned perfectly.Although my freshman year in Oxford wasn’t the best, I believe anyone could

have overcome it at Wembley.

Murphy, a former player for Norwich City, Cardiff City, and the England youth team, scored 10 goals for Oxford

United in 2023–24 in all competitions. Four of those goals came after the beginning of April.

One repeating theme for Sunderland this summer has been Murphy, who never really appeared like a lock to

join the club. However, he shown his abilities in the play-off final, which may have caught Sunderland and other

Championship teams’ attention.

Murphy, though, appears to be staying at Oxford United. Probably understandable given that Oxford offered

him an opportunity to succeed after a few difficult years and that, as John notes, new boss Buckingham has

begun to bring out the best in him.
