Newcastle United confident of £25m Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal to save Everton PSR worry

By trading Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle United this summer, Everton can allay any worries that it would violate the Profit & Sustainability Regulations, according to the Daily Mirror.

Paul Brown revealed on page 55 and the back page of their print edition [May 30] that Eddie Howe is reportedly very interested in the 27-year-old England international, who may decide to transfer to St. James’ Park.

This summer, a number of Everton’s star players have been linked to other teams. Jarrad Branthwaite, who Manchester United is reportedly pursuing, while Arsenal are also interested in Amadou Onana.

According to Brown, one of the Everton players drawing notice is Calvert-Lewin because of the club’s problems with PSR.

“That would virtually guarantee Everton does not break PSR rules again the following season if he is sold for £25 million or more before the end of June.”

It’s unclear how willing Calvert-Lewin is to leave Goodison Park, which has been his home for the past eight years due to injuries, goals, and form.

Although Callum Wilson appears certain to depart Newcastle, the 27-year-old is still Sean Dyche’s first-choice center-forward as he approaches the last year of his current deal. Eddie Howe is rumored to have him at the top of his wish list on Tyneside.

However, from an Everton standpoint, the Toffees need to make every effort to guarantee a much more peaceful season financially, as discussions about a new acquisition fizzle out and the team is forced to face the fact that it will need to shed one or more assets, given that Calvert-Lewin’s age and England caps would drive up his asking price.

With four goals in his final seven league games, the striker closed out 2023–24 in fine form. He played for an incredibly well-run Dyche team that avoided relegation with weeks remaining in the season, despite being docked eight points for precisely the kind of thing they are attempting to avoid this summer.

At a pivotal juncture in his career, a transfer to Newcastle may provide him a change of scenery and a lucrative deal, but there would be less assurance of playing time as Newcastle looks to cling onto star Alexander Isak this summer.

However, Everton’s hand will probably be forced.
