When his contract expires at the end of June, Premier League team Newcastle United will release the right-sided player.

Ritchie, who played for Portsmouth in the junior system,

is eager to return to the team before he ends his playing career.

It is unknown if Portsmouth wants to sign the 34-year-old to assist with their Championship campaign,

but if Ritchie does sign with Portsmouth, he will have to accept a “enormous drop in wages,” according to journalist Chris Wise.

Portsmouth might not be able to come to an arrangement with him even in that case.

Ritchie last participated in the Championship during the 2016–17 season, after seven seasons of Premier League action.

This season, he made 13 appearances in the top division for Newcastle and scored a goal against Bournemouth.

With 123 appearances in the Championship, Ritchie is a seasoned player that Portsmouth would be gaining if they acquire him.
