£44,000 per week star agrees to ‘Enormous Drop In Wages’ to join Pompey as personal agreed on a 3-year deal

Matt Ritchie would need to accept a ‘enormous drop in earnings’ to join Portsmouth this summer.

The right-sided player will be released by Premier League club Newcastle United when his contract expires at the end of June.

Ritchie came up through Portsmouth’s junior system and wants to play for the club again before calling it quits.

It is unknown whether Portsmouth want to bring in the 34-year-old to aid with their Championship campaign, but according to journalist Chris Wise, if Ritchie does join Fratton Park, he will have to accept a ‘enormous drop in earnings’.

Even then, it is unclear whether Portsmouth will be able to reach an arrangement with him.

Ritchie has spent the last seven seasons in the Premier League, most recently playing in the Championship in 2016/17.

This season, he made 13 top-flight appearances for Newcastle and scored against Bournemouth.

If Portsmouth sign Ritchie, they will be adding an experienced Championship campaigner, as the midfielder has made 123 appearances in the division.
