Former Premier League manager who Sunderland fancied rejects Championship offer

A former Premier League manager who Sunderland had high hopes for this season has turned down an offer from a

Championship team.

Ahead of the preseason and summer transfer window, supporters of Sunderland are becoming increasingly

concerned as the team continues to operate without a manager.

It looks like the Black Cats are losing out on a number of managerial targets: Danny Rohl recently signed a new contract

with Sheffield Wednesday, while Bo Svensson recently took over at Union Berlin.

Will Still was linked to Norwich City last week, so a move seems uncertain, but the Canaries seem to have other players

higher on their priority list.

There is undoubtedly growing pressure on Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus to find a replacement for Michael Beale.

However, Louis-Dreyfus is said to have been interested in another name, but the Championship team has now rejected it.

Steve Cooper rejects Burnley approach

Following Beale’s dismissal in February, former Swansea City and Nottingham Forest manager

Steve Cooper was one of the early favorites to take over at Sunderland.

Additionally, Sunderland Cooper and Louis-Dreyfus appreciated each other, as previously reported by AFC News.

Social media posts on Cooper from Black Cats supporters frequently expressed gratitude for his efforts at Nottingham Forest,

who he helped advance from the Championship through the play-offs in 2022.

However, as journalist David Ornstein on X disclosed, Cooper has now turned down the opportunity to take over as manager of Burnley.

Cooper is “in contention for managerial roles at a number of Premier League clubs,” according to Ornstein,

who also notes that the Welshman is eager to return to the top division.

Sunderland chances of Steve Cooper appointment end

Cooper has always struck me as Sunderland’s ambitious new hire. However, Cooper appreciated the initiative and Sunderland is a very ambitious club, so there was definitely a potential that Cooper would accept the position.

But, it appears like Sunderland’s prospects of signing the Welshman have now completely evaporated, as Cooper has now rejected Burnley after their Premier League relegation and is holding out for a return to the top level.

That, combined with Sunderland failing to pull the trigger on a manager and seemingly showing a lack of direction and planning could mean that Cooper fell out of admiration for the club a long time ago.

It’s certainly proving to be a tricky appointment for Sunderland, and the longer that this managerial vacancy stays open, the more it seems like a difficult job for whoever comes in this summer.
