Manager ‘declines’ offer to join Leeds United’s Championship promotion rivals as new favourite emerges

Burnley‘s search for a new manager appears to be in doubt as sources indicate Steve Cooper “declined” the

chance to take charge at Turf Moor.

The Clarets were officially relegated from the Premier League a while ago. They were demoted together with

Sheffield United and Luton Town, the other two promoted teams immediately falling back. However, manager

Vincent Kompany appears to be headed for a significant promotion, as the former defender is expected to take

over for Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

For a while now, reports have connected Kompany to the Bayern position, and Turf Moor’s management must

have been looking for alternatives in case he leaves. Cooper seemed a more promising prospect, but according

to The Athletic, he is waiting to return to the Premier League and will not be pursuing a post with Burnley.

Cooper had two outstanding seasons at Nottingham Forest, helping the team advance from the Championship

and eventually win a spot in the Premier League. Even after being fired in December 2023, he has continued to

be a top contender for many teams seeking new managers.

After Leeds was relegated under Sam Allardyce last summer, the 44-year-old was considered a potential

successor. However, 49ers Enterprises, which assumed control of the team soon after the season concluded,

encountered comparable problems as Cooper was eager to hold out for a shot in the elite division.

With news of Cooper’s decision, Scott Parker has become the bookies’ favorite to replace Kompany at Burnley.

The former midfield player was fired by Belgian team Club Brugge after just 12 games in command. He had

previously led Bournemouth and Fulham to Championship promotions. After Parker, Frank Lampard is the

second favorite.
