Wayne Rooney appointed new Rangers manager.
Rangers have appointed former Monaco and Club Bruges head coach Philippe Clement as their new manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract., external
The 49-year-old former Belgium defender succeeds Michael Beale, who was sacked earlier this month.
Clement was sacked himself by Monaco in June after 18 months in charge when his side finished sixth in Ligue 1.
Rangers chairman John Bennett said the Belgian was “the outstanding candidate across all the key criteria”.
He claimed that over the course of ten days, a team led by chief executive James Bisgrove,
board members, and former Rangers player and manager Graeme Souness had examined “several high-calibre candidates” as part of the “carefully planned and comprehensive recruitment process.”
According to reports, the Scottish Premiership team had narrowed down their shortlist to Clement and former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat, head coach of Yokohama F Marinos.
As the Belgian was selected Rangers’ 19th manager, Bennett cited Clement’s “track record of winning titles”
—lifting his domestic league trophy three seasons in a row.
Clement expressed his excitement at the opportunity to succeed at one of Europe’s most illustrious clubs on the Rangers website.
In preparation for Hibernian’s visit on Saturday,
Rangers claim the “new management team” will have their first meeting with the playing group on Monday. This will mark the start of Hibernian’s mission to cut into Celtic’s seven-point lead.
During his two stints as caretaker at Bruges, where he had also played for ten years, Clement experienced management for the first time.
He oversaw Beveren and Genk, emerging as a manager in his own right.
After leading Beveren and Genk to the league title,
he went on to establish himself as a manager and repeated the feat in the next two seasons at Bruges.
In January 2021, Clement took over as Monaco’s manager from Niko Kovac, and the team moved up from sixth to third in the league.
But after losing to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League group stage,
they were eliminated from the Europa League and defeated by Bayer Leverkusen in the knockout stage,
having finished second in their group behind Ferencvaros.
