Chris Rigg hints at Sunderland stay amid Newcastle interest

Chris Rigg, Sunderland’s 16-year-old breakout star,

has stated he intends to stay with the team despite reports of interest from Newcastle United, a local rival.

In the 2023–24 season, Rigg made 21 appearances for the Black Cats in the Championship and scored two goals as he broke through into the Sunderland first team.

The Hebburn-born young player, who is presently representing England at the U17 Euros,

has reportedly drawn interest from Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund.

Although rumors about his future have been circulating,

Rigg has stated to club media that he wants to secure a spot in the starting lineup.

When asked what his goals were for the upcoming term, he replied, “One is to be a regular starter.

Striking a lot of goals, assists, and so on in an effort to get us back into the Premier League.

With his goal in the Carabao Cup against Crewe Alexandra, Rigg also made history as the club’s youngest goalscorer ever.

When he turns 17 in June, he’ll be able to sign a professional deal.

After a difficult season that saw them finish 16th in the championship,

Sunderland has not yet named a permanent replacement for Michael Beale, who was fired after just two months in command.
