The Black Cats are ready to earn some cash after Southampton defeated Leeds United in the Championship play-off final over the weekend.

A year after being demoted from the Premier League, the two sides faced off at Wembley Stadium.

After finishing three points behind the Whites,

Adam Armstrong‘s first-half goal proved to be the difference in the English capital,

propelling the Saints back into the top flight.

Ross Stewart, who left Sunderland for the south coast last summer,

could soon be playing Premier League football with no effort.

Southampton were still willing to pay up to £10 million for the striker,

despite the fact that he had been out for nearly 19 months.

but Southampton were still prepared to pay up to £10 million for his signature half way through his injury-ridden spell.

Stewart returned to play just last month,

making only four senior games before winning a spot in the Premier League.

Sunderland is expected to collect seven figures from Southampton’s win.

It has been extremely financially beneficial to the Black Cats,

who accepted a proposal of £8 million plus £2 million in add-ons last summer.

The extra £2 million was expected to be paid to Sunderland if Southampton earned promotion,

and despite Stewart’s absence from Wembley, the Wearside club will now receive an additional seven figures.

It’s a large figure for a club that doesn’t appear to have the money to spend this season,

and it could allow them to sign another first-team player.

Many fans were devastated when Stewart left the Stadium of Light after scoring 40 goals in 80 appearances for the club.

However, it has proven to be a wonderful piece of business.

Ross Stewart’s departure was excellent business from Sunderland.

Stewart’s contract expired this summer,

so if we had opted to keep him last year, he could have departed for free.

The Scot suffered another injury shortly after signing for the Saints, so if he had stayed on Wearside,

the club would have lost £10 million and only gotten a few appearances from him before he became a free agent.

The Black Cats undoubtedly miss him, but they made the best of a difficult situation.

After spending the remainder of the Stewart money on players such as Nazariy Rusyn and Romaine Mundle,

Sunderland must now invest wisely with the extra £2 million they have received.
