LONDON (AP) — In the richest one-off event in soccer history, the Championship playoff final,

Southampton’s 1-0 victory over Leeds at Wembley Stadium on Sunday guaranteed an instant return to the Premier League.

The south coast club will receive an additional 140 million pounds ($180 million)

in earnings from prize money and broadcast revenue as a result of Adam Armstrong’s 24th-minute winner at England’s national stadium.

With Leicester and Ipswich earning automatic promotion from the Championship,

Southampton will return to the lucrative Premier League.

Leeds’ postseason struggles persisted, despite the fact that the club’s U.S.

ownership group includes major winners Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.English premier league Stock Photos, Royalty Free English premier league Images | Depositphotos

Leeds has now missed out on promotion through the post-season series six times.

The fact that Leeds only won one of its final six games to miss out on automatic promotion after finishing third in the regular season, three points above Southampton in fourth place, makes it even more agonizing.

Armstrong scored Southampton’s 24th league goal of the season with a low finish into the far corner after latching onto a through pass that sliced through the Leeds defense.

Southampton had largely retreated and relied on counterattacks during the match.

Leeds, one of the most renowned clubs in England,

was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022–2023 season,

and they had no answer, hardly challenging Southampton’s five-man defense in what turned out to be a dull season finale.

Despite not playing our best today, I believe we showed a different side, said Jack Stephens,

a defender for Southampton who has been a member of the team since 2011.

This season, a few people have questioned our ability to defend and persevere. We proved we could, I believe.

The closest Leeds got was when Dan James, a replacement, hit the crossbar with a dipping effort in the 84th minute.
