According to Frank McAvennie, Kristoffer Ajer has been mentioned as a potential Celtic transfer target this summer.

The Brentford defender left Parkhead in the summer of 2021 for a cost of approximately £13.5 million.

He has appeared 31 times for the Bees in all competitions this season and 69 overall, with injuries affecting sections of his Premier League career.

Ajer is signed to Brentford for another four seasons with an option for another year, and given his current status as a fixture in Thomas Frank‘s side, a deal appears unlikely, even on loan. However, former striker McAvennie claimed to have heard news of Ajer’s comeback.

This season, Liam Scales has been Celtic’s primary defender. Cameron Carter-Vickers has been out this season, while Maik Nawrocki, Gustaf Lagerbielke, and Stephen Welsh have struggled to establish themselves in the starting lineup. McAvennie would welcome the Ajer deal.

He told Football Insider: “They’ve always done that. It’s similar to when they signed Van Dijk; Celtic consistently attracts these types of players,

which is fantastic. Even Ajer is rumoured to be returning from Brentford.”He’s a huge centre-half, and just being in England will help him improve.

They’ll get a better player than the one they released. He is a massive lump of a boy.”When you go down there, the training is very different. I’m not sure what Brendan is like, but he’s clearly one of the greatest coaches. I wouldn’t mind him returning; we need guys to go to Europe.

“Under Martin O’Neill, we added players like Sutton and Hartson. “Those are the players we should be signing.”
