Southampton’s newly elected Lord Mayor is supporting the Saints to win the play-off championship at Wembley.

Cllr Dave Shields, a lifelong supporter, hopes to see Russell Martin’s team return to the south coast as a Premier League team.

On Sunday, May 26, Saints and Leeds United meet at the national stadium in a match that is frequently

referred to as the wealthiest football match because of the large financial awards for the winner.

Selected last week by his fellow members of the city council, Cllr.

Shields forwent the opportunity to watch his team play at Wembley in favor of being

in the city when thousands of locals were unable to purchase tickets.

On Sunday morning, he will greet fans as they arrive at Southampton

Central Railway Station and start their journeys up to the capital.

“As a lifelong Saints supporter since the mid-1960s,

I am fervently eager for our club to be restored to the top flight of English football as soon as possible.

,” the Lord Mayor stated to the LDRS.

“The natural order of things football-wise is the Saints as the premier team on England’s

south coast and deeper south of England hinterland, and the previous balance needs to be restored urgently.”

“I’ve watched our team play at Wembley three times this century.

I was there the first time we won the Johntsone’s Paint Trophy, but sadly,

we lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup semifinal and to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final.

However, I am aware of the resiliency of our team, its supporters, and the city at large.

I thus hope our squad has a successful Sunday and that they return home with the win.

Following the Saints’ semifinal triumph over West Bromwich Albion, 36,900 tickets

for the grand finale at Wembley were rapidly gathered by fans.

This included 1,233 more tickets, which on Wednesday, May 22, sold out in just an hour after being made available.

Supporters who take the train to the game are encouraged to budget additional time for their travels.

as lines may form at stations and services are anticipated to be very congested.
