It was widely believed that Djokovic would not let this chance pass him by because he had to wait so long to overcome Nadal at the French Open.

Wawrinka advanced to his second Major final at the 2015 French Open after winning the Grand Slam at the Australian Open in 2014.

Wawrinka admitted in an interview with Express-Sport that he was “really nervous” when he stepped onto the court, but that he soon took a time to gather himself and his focus returned.

Naturally, he was the overwhelming favorite going into the match. He had won 30 straight matches, he was ranked No. 1, and he had defeated Rafa, Wawrinka told Express-Sport.

However, I also realized that, on a fair playing field, I was prepared to engage in combat with him. I felt like I was ready for the final, both physically and mentally.

In the end, I think I played at the best level I have ever played on a clay court in the French Open final, so I’m satisfied with that. It was also one of my finest matches ever.

Wawrinka won his third Grand Slam championship in 2016 by defeating Djokovic in the US Open final, having previously defeated the Serb in the French Open final in 2015.
