Cruzeiro’s owner, Pedro Lourenco, has acknowledged the club’s interest in Aston Villa’s Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho’s future at Villa Park will come under scrutiny this summer, having spent the entire season on loan. While Unai Emery led Villa to a top-four finish in the Premier League and qualification for the Champions League, as well as the Europa Conference League semi-finals, Coutinho was playing for Al Duhail in the Qatar Stars League.

The Brazilian, recruited by previous manager Steven Gerrard, is almost destined to leave Villa Park, with reports suggesting the club is considering cancelling his contract, which runs until 2026, following his move from Barcelona. A transfer to Brazilian club Cruzeiro may also represent an option, with Lourenco describing a deal as “a big dream”. Billionaire Lourenco completed a takeover of the club last month from Brazil legend Ronaldo.

“A major dream is Coutinho, for example. We have a tremendous dream to bring him in. “A player like that,” he told Globo. “Coutinho is a real dream, and if we can bring him in, we’ll make every effort.”
