According to Simon Grayson Sunderland are set to announce Liam Rosenior as their new manager this weekend

Sunderland’s hunt for a new manager continues, with the club still looking for a replacement for Michael Beale, who was fired earlier this year.

The Mackems parted ways with the former Queens Park Rangers manager in February,

leaving Mike Dodds to supervise first-team matters until the end of the season.

The Stadium of Light leadership has taken their time with the next appointment to ensure they hire the right man for the job,

with a number of managers linked to the position in recent months.

One recent name that has cropped up is Liam Rosenior,

the former Hull City manager who was fired by the Tigers days after the Championship season ended,

and Simon Grayson  believes he could be the man to fit the bill on Wearside.

“Have to be given time”: Simon Grayson on Sunderland’s manager vacancy

Grayson is as familiar as anyone with the ups and downs of being in charge at the Stadium of Light,

having led Sunderland for 18 games in 2017.

With the squad in turmoil both on and off the pitch following their relegation from the Premier League,

the former Blackpool manager was unable to stem their decline in the Championship,

overseeing only three wins throughout his tenure.

Tony Mowbray faced a similar fate at the start of the current season,

when he was fired after scoring 37 points in the first 25 games, prior to Beale’s disastrous tenure.

Mowbray will have felt wronged by his dismissal from the club,

much as Rosenior did in Humberside earlier this month,

and Grayson is not surprised he has already been connected to the position farther up the east coast.

Grayson told Football League World via freebets.com: “When you look at Liam’s record,

he did pretty well at Hull to finish just outside the playoffs, and it was a major surprise when he lost his job.

“I’m sure he’ll be associated with a number of teams,

but the main thing to look at with Sunderland is that they haven’t done anything yet; it’s been a long process.

“There have been numerous names mentioned by both UK-based and international managers;

Will Still’s name has been floated for many, many months.

“One thing Sunderland will regret is removing Tony Mowbray when they were in a very good position.

“But that’s part and parcel of what’s happened;

there’s been a significant turnover of managers at Sunderland over the last five,

ten years, and at some point there has to be some consistency,

and managers must be given time to implement their ideas.

“They need to get this appointment sorted sooner rather than later,

but also make sure it’s the right appointment going forward for a number of years.”

Sunderland is reportedly interested in Liam Rosenior.

Will Still begins negotiations with Norwich City.

Rosenior appears to be the key aim for Sunderland in recent days, with long-term target Will Still also garnering interest from Norwich City.

The 31-year-old is claimed to have been drawing interest from the Stadium of Light since the position became available in the northeast,

prompting him to leave Ligue 1 club Reims earlier this month.

Sunderland reportedly met with Still [above] before appointing Beale in December,

only for talks to break down before reigniting interest a few months later.

However, with Norwich City joining the managerial merry-go-round last week after sacking David Wagner,

the Canaries are thought to have entered the competition for the much-admired young manager.

According to Chris Reeve of BBC Norfolk, the Englishman was spotted at the club’s training ground earlier this week,

fueling speculation that the former Sunderland target will be appointed.

Rene Maric, Bayern Munich’s youth coach, has also been linked to the Wearside vacancy,

but the German club is said to be considering promoting him to assistant manager to ward off interest.

With Still and Maric potentially out of the picture, all eyes appear to be on Rosenior,

who will believe he has unfinished business following his abrupt departure three weeks ago.

The former Derby County player is claimed to have turned down overtures from Plymouth Argyle and Birmingham City in recent weeks,

cementing his status as one of the EFL’s most promising young managers.
