The Black Cats have confirmed David Moyes as their new manager.

The former Manchester United and Everton manager has signed a four-year contract,

barely a day after the Football Association named Sam Allardyce as the new England manager.

Moyes, who has been out of management since being fired by Real Sociedad in November,

expressed his joy at returning to the Premier League.

“I’m thrilled to have joined Sunderland.

“I am relishing the challenge and thrilled with the opportunity,”

Moyes told the club’s official website.

“I’ve taken over a large British club with a lot of support, and I’m excited to work in the Premier League again.

“I look forward to continuing the good work done by Sam.”

Moyes began his managing career at Preston North End in 1998, then spent 11 years at Everton.

The Scotsman led the Toffees to eight top-half Premier League finishes in ten full seasons as

manager before succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford in 2013.

With the retirement of former manager Allardyce,

Sunderland has moved rapidly to fill the vacancy, with the new season less than a month out.

Chairman Ellis Short welcomed Moyes to the club, stating that the 53-year-old was their main objective.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome David Moyes to Sunderland, who was by far and away our first choice,” Ellis stated.

“He is a man whose football resume speaks for itself and whom I have always appreciated.

I’ve spoken with him on several times and have always been quite impressed.

“He was my top managerial objective for the last five appointments,

but his desire to fulfil existing contracts prevented us from bringing him to Sunderland previously.

“Being able to finally welcome him as manager is excellent news for the club.

“The fact that David has committed to a four-year deal is a clear demonstration of his belief in what he can achieve here.”

Moyes attended Sunderland’s pre-season friendly at Rotherham on Saturday before flying off with the rest of the group to France this weekend.
