Rangers manager Philippe Clement must show he has learned from Celtic meetings
You can only wee with the organ that is bestowed upon you, to borrow a well-known proverb from Scottish folklore. Words, or variations on them, that have been used innumerable times in the last few months when talking about Philippe Clement’s work at Rangers.
The Belgian’s ability to lead the team that Michael Beale had left behind, compete for the championship with Celtic, and even appear to have the upper hand at one point was first viewed as somewhat of a miracle.
Unfortunately, the mental fragility that has dogged the Rangers club over the past few years returned to attack them at the worst possible time.
This team got the willies again. After a few shocking matches against Dundee and Ross County, as well as another loss at Celtic Park, Brendan Rodgers found himself at the top of the standings once more. I will now abandon this theme. and perhaps visit a therapist.
The thing is, Rangers supporters hold these players in such low regard that any success their team has had recently has been attributed to Clement’s genius, with all of the responsibility for their eventual failure to win the Premiership title falling on the players.
You could make a valid argument. But come Saturday night, it very well may turn out that this current Rangers team is a double winner.
The wise money, however, is against that happening because Celtic has won three of the four matches between the teams this season and the fourth has ended in a draw.
The hard truth is that too many players in this current Ibrox squad haven’t proven they have enough about them over the piece to bring sustainable success to the club. Granted, Cantwell might have some mettle after finally defeating Celtic in a game that matters.
