Southampton looks to go six games without a loss when they visit Wayne Rooney’s Birmingham City on Saturday in Championship action at St Mary’s.
Wayne Rooney will require some time to acquaint himself with his Birmingham City squad,
according to Southampton boss Russell Martin.
The former England and Manchester United striker was appointed manager of the Blues at the beginning of October,
although he has lost his first two games in that role.
Rooney’s return to the Championship hasn’t gone well;
during his previous stay in the second division,
his Derby County team was demoted to League One as a result of numerous point deductions.
Birmingham’s schedule doesn’t get much easier; they are currently playing Southampton,
who are fifth in the standings and have won their past five league games, on the south coast.
During his pre-match news conference on Friday afternoon,
Saints manager Martin fielded questions about Rooney’s debut against Birmingham City.
The 37-year-old was asked if he was excited for the spotlight to be on the opposing dugout on Saturday instead than the home one.
Martin retorted, “I believe we’ve already received enough attention.
” “I believe that a lot of people are anxious to see it fail as well, and that many are also interested in the story,
the transformation happening here, and everything else. I believe that’s why people find that intriguing.
Wayne, however, undoubtedly adds his unique appeal due to his professional background. As a manager,
I’ve dealt with him a few times, and he seems to be really competent. He’s a terrific guy and has been great after the games.
“So, it’s clear that he was asked to bring his own approach to the game and alter it.
However, as we discovered, this is never an easy process,
so I’m sure he will discover a lot about his squad and what he needs to adjust to.
“So, this game will undoubtedly be challenging. In this league, every game is,
but we have a great opportunity to make this a really, really great week.
