NOW OFFICIALL: Sunderland confirm the appointment of Frank Lampard as head coach as Liam Rosenior deal collapse

Sunderland could now target ‘fabulous’ manager if they fail to land first-choice option

The Black Cats now has a recently terminated coach

‘on the radar’ in case they miss out on their top targets.

Sunderland fired Michael Beale three months ago today,

and they have been without a permanent head coach since.

Mike Dodds was named interim manager until the conclusion of the season,

but no one anticipated how disastrous his tenure would be.

While fans had hoped for a replacement at the end of the season,

the club is failed to appoint a new manager two weeks after losing to Sheffield Wednesday on the final day.

Will Still, 31, left Reims after their last game against Rennes this evening,

and they have been heavily connected with a move.

The Black Cats have also been associated with Bo Svensson and Rene Maric,

so it appears increasingly probable that they will hire from overseas.

However, writer Alan Nixon has stated that they may look far closer to home

‘if they fail to land one of the foreign targets’.

Nixon stated on his Patreon page,

“Liam Rosenior is on the radar for Birmingham City and Sunderland after turning down an approach from Plymouth Argyle.”

“Rosenior had only recently left Hull City, but Argyle approached him for negotiations.

However, competing clubs are interested and may be more tempting.

“If they do not land one of the foreign targets for the Black Cats position, Sunderland may come after Rosenior.

“Blues are waiting on word on Tony Mowbray’s recovery from illness

but would move for Rosenior if that return was not possible.”

Why is he so underrated?

Hull City fans were startled when it was announced that Liam Rosenior was going,

and despite missing out on the play-offs, they clearly believed in the ‘fantastic’ 39-year-old for next season.

Given his age and potential with the Tigers,

it’s surprising that he’s already attracting interest from Birmingham and Plymouth,

one of whom will play League One football.

It would undoubtedly leave Sunderland as the most appealing offer for Rosenior,

with the Black Cats hoping to reach the play-offs next season.

Rosenior would have likely been far higher on Sunderland’s shortlist

if they hadn’t been looking for a new manager for three months.

He would be a very promising alternative if the team is unable to bring in first-choice players,

but Will Still appears to be the best option.
