JUST IN: Sunderland ‘new’ manager set to be interviewed by club this week.

This week, a prospective Sunderland manager will be interviewed for a Championship position.

After Michael Beale‘s 12-game tenure as manager of the Black Cats ended, the club fired him, and Sunderland has been without a manager for three months.

Although some of those names are also being considered by other clubs, names are still being connected to the Stadium of Light project.

Liam Rosenior was recently fired by Hull City, and shortly after, rumors started to connect him to the Sunderland opening.

Then, Plymouth Argyle attempted to sign Rosenior, who is a preferred Sunderland appointment alongside Kevin Phillips, but the 39-year-old declined the offer.

And Plymouth will now try again this week to bring in Paul Heckingbottom, a manager connected to Sunderland.

Plymouth Argyle set to interview Paul Heckingbottom

Heckingbottom, 46, led Sheffield United to promotion from the Championship in 2023 before being fired by the club in December.

He was once identified as Sunderland’s top target earlier this year, however reports shortly thereafter stated that Heckingbottom was no longer in the running.

However, Heckingbottom may now forego any interest from Sunderland in order to accept the Plymouth Argyle position, as John Percy has revealed that Heckingbottom will be interviewed this week by the south coast team.

Percy posted on X: “Plymouth Argyle are close to appointing a new head coach… Paul Heckingbottom set to be interviewed this week and is one of several options under consideration.

“Argyle keen to appoint a new manager with experience of the leagues.”

Plymouth Argyle looking for one thing that Sunderland are not

This summer, managers are needed at Sunderland and Plymouth. But they both seem intent on appointing distinct kinds of management.

Although Percy claims that Plymouth wants a manager with experience, there have been other rumors claiming that Sunderland would prefer a much younger player.

Seemingly, Sunderland wants to take a chance on a player akin to Will Still or Danny Rohl, with the expectation that they can mesh better with Wearside’s extremely youthful first team.

However, Plymouth, who were 21st in the Championship and trailed Sunderland by just five points in 16th, is looking for Heckingbottom—someone who has experienced the rigors of the second division.

However, Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus may have more success hiring a hybrid of the two sorts in this case; someone like Rohl, who is still young but has very little, if any, experience in the second tier.

Heckingbottom might still be in the race for the Sunderland job and could still be competitive, but Louis-Dreyfus might need to move quickly going forward to beat Plymouth to the appointment.

And if the Black Cats don’t act sooner rather than later, this may be the first of several managers they pass up this summer.
