Breaking News: Liam Rosenior keen on Sunderland job as the 39-year-old is pushing hard for deal to be completed

Former England midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Liam Rosenior would be an excellent choice for Sunderland.

This comes as the Black Cats continue to look for a new manager following the sacking of Mick Beale in February.

Sunderland chose to put Mike Dodds in interim command until the conclusion of the season,

but his stint was not much better, as the team suffered a disastrous end to the season.

So much so that the Black Cats barely won any games of football and finished the season in 16th position with 56 points,

only six points ahead of the relegation zone.

So their quest for a new manager continues, with the club recently being connected with a bid for former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior.

Carlton Palmer thinks Liam Rosenior would be a fantastic fit for Sunderland.

We asked former Sheffield Wednesday player Carlton Palmer about Sunderland being linked with a move for Liam Rosenior.

Palmer believes Rosenior would be a fantastic fit for Sunderland,

but their stance on backroom staff and other issues could prevent them from hiring the former Hull City manager.

He informed FLW that Sunderland are the latest club to be linked with Liam Rosenior.

“Rosenior recently declined the Plymouth Argyle job.

He was let go by Hull after performing admirably, therefore he will be in high demand.

“Sunderland is still searching for a manager. Will Still’s appointment, which we all expected after he departed Reins,

has yet to happen. As a result, Liam Rosenior’s name has appeared in the job posting.

“I don’t think Liam is in a situation where he will go there and do what they want to do,

which is to work with their team, and simply bring one person of staff with him.

“If Sunderland wish to sign Liam Rosenior, they will have to bring his team and work the way he prefers.

“That is the reason Sunderland hasn’t been able to secure a manager up to this point,

because the situation or the realms of how the leadership want to operate the football club,

any manager worth their salt will not go there under those circumstances.

“So, Liam Rosenior would be an excellent choice for any football team based on his performance.

He would be an excellent addition due to his offensive style of football, desire to play the game, and demeanour.

“Sunderland may look at Liam Rosenior and say, ‘okay, if we want to move the club ahead,

we are wanting to get back into the Premier League, then you have a young manager who could be there for years’.

“But they have got to change their stance on how they want to go forward,

there has got to be a balance between the young players and the senior players,

but this would be a good appointment if Sunderland can get it over the line.”

The latest on Sunderland’s search for a new manager

As previously said, Sunderland is still looking for a new manager, so that will be the football club’s top priority this summer.

The Black Cats are looking for a new head coach, and various names have been associated with the position,

including Will Still, Paul Heckingbottom, Bo Svensson, and Danny Rohl.

However, a fresh name has emerged as a prospective Sunderland target: Liam Rosenior.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Sunderland are interested in Rosenior and may seek to sign him if a deal for other targets fails.

However, the Black Cats will have to compete for his signature,

with Nixon also adding that Birmingham City are keeping a watch on Rosenior in case

they need to make an appointment based on what happens to Tony Mowbray.

Liam Rosenior would undoubtedly be interested in the Sunderland position.

Liam Rosenior surely didn’t expect to be out of job heading into the summer, but that’s what happened,

and the 39-year-old will now be hoping an opportunity to get back into management comes around quickly.

Rosenior will most likely not be out of employment for long,

as he has excelled with his brief time in management and is only leaving because the Hull City owner wants to take a different course.

So, the 39-year-old still has a strong pedigree in the game, so it’s no wonder that teams like Sunderland are interested in signing him.

Rosenior would undoubtedly love to lead a team like Sunderland, given their riches and size in comparison to other Championship clubs.

The ex-Hull boss will want to stay in the Championship at the very least, so if Sunderland and Birmingham City were to compete,

the former would undoubtedly have an advantage.
