According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa must resist the temptation to cash in on local sensation Jacob Ramsey, who has “no desire to leave”.

The study, published on May 20, details Villa’s need to sell players in order to fund a summer transfer

splurge in preparation for Champions League participation next season while adhering to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Any monies gained from Ramsey’s sale as an academy graduate would be considered pure profit,

and Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur are all reportedly interested.

Should Aston Villa keep, or sell, Jacob Ramsey?

The financial motives for selling Ramsey are clear.

Ramsey, a young, skilled 22-year-old English midfielder with more than three years left on his contract,

would most certainly attract a high transfer price,

which would enhance Villa’s finances and help them stay on the right side of the Premier League’s financial rules.

However, Villa is Ramsey’s childhood club, and the midfielder has a lot to offer his team on the pitch as they fight in the Champions League next season.

Injuries have limited him to 1,057 minutes and 21 appearances this season,

with just 848 of those coming in the Premier League, where he scored and assisted.

However, despite being deprived of enough time to improve on his encouraging tally of six goals and seven assists in the tournament last season,

he exhibited a variety of traits that speak to his overall player development.

For example, the 22-year-old won an astonishing 62.5% of his aerial duels in the Premier League this season,

losing only 0.32 per 90. The former result places Ramsey in the 99th percentile among attacking midfielders and wingers in the division.

The kid was also meticulous in his defensive duties, averaging 1.58 Premier League blocks and 1.69 tackles per 90.

For a player who is frequently defined by his creative and offensive qualities – which he demonstrated this season,

averaging 2.32 passes into the final third per 90 – to have generated such encouraging stats against the ball at such a young age is quite impressive.

Villa would be wise to keep their local jewel – or risk regretting his sale later on.
