For the season’s last league match, the Hoops manager decided to rest Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers,  giving Welsh and Nawrocki a chance to shine at the center of defense.

Sadly, the former player wasted his opportunity to make a good impression as he had a dreadful performance

and left the field with what looked to be an arm injury.

Nawrocki excelled the Celtic academy graduate with his work in and out of possession throughout the afternoon

at Parkhead, as the table above illustrates.

It was a ‘tough’ game for the right-footed liability, according to Football Insider’s Callum O’Connell,

who gave him a miserable player rating of 2/10 due to his poor performance.

Welsh’s poor header towards his own goal in the first half gave the St Mirren forward a clear opportunity to

score. The centre-back then clumsily dragged the forward down in the area to make up for his mistake.

It was the worst moment of the game for Welsh.

Commentator Chris Sutton, whose voice you can hear in the video above, called it a “horrific” error on the part

of the Scotsman, who was at fault for giving the ball away and then fouling to earn the penalty.

In the end, it made no difference that day because goals from Kyogo and Palma altered the tide of the match,

with the winner coming after the defender replaced Scales, to prevent a loss or tie against St Mirren.

Considering Welsh’s performance this season and his call-ups by the Northern Ireland head coach, this should

be the last straw for Welsh.

The form of Stephen Welsh for Celtic this year

The 24-year-old failure, who only made four Premiership appearances under Postecoglou in the 2022–2023

season, was used eleven times by Celtic in the league this year.

The Scottish giant did not perform enough in those ten games for Rodgers to establish his worth as a significant

member of the team beyond the current campaign.

It would take an enormous amount of work for Welsh to turn things around and establish himself as a regular

starter at Parkhead with Carter-Vickers, Scales, and Nawrocki ahead of him with Lagerbielke still in the lineup.
