On May 18, 2024, X user @ArdorNew shared a screenshot purporting to be a statement from Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid

supporting the team’s kicker, Harrison Butker, who had drawn criticism after his commencement speech on May 11 at Benedictine College,

a private Catholic liberal arts university in Kansas.

According to the Associated Press, among other topics covered in Butker’s address were women and parenthood, Pride Month, and US

President Joe Biden’s policies. A video of the entire lecture can be found on Benedictine College’s official YouTube account, and the

National Catholic Register website has a transcript in its entirety.

The post claims that Reid stated he would think about retiring should the Chiefs choose to bench Butker for making the speech. Reid is

reported to have stated, “If Harrison goes, I go with him.”

The post’s caption said what was written below:

When he heard reports that the Chiefs leadership was considering firing Harrison Butker, Andy Reed [sic] made it clear to them where he

stands.

“Even after Kelce yelled at me on the field, you allowed the spectacle to continue. Not at this moment. I draw the line at this point.”

Reed stated that he had no intention of breaching his contract. “I’m due to retire, if that’s what it takes.”

Andy Reed says, “If Harrison Goes, I Go With Him,” as he stands behind Harrison Butker.

This piece, however, was not an accurate account of events that actually happened. One of the Facebook groups and websites that make up

the America’s Last Line of Defense network of satire and parody is America – Love It Or Leave It. The screenshot in X user @ArdorNew’s

post showed a different post that originated on this page. Put differently, none of the statements described in the post were actually uttered

by Reid.

The Chiefs have not yet released an official team statement in regards to Butker’s speech, per the Kansas City Star. Reid does not appear to

have released a comment, either.
