Why Crystal Palace will receive £5m after Southampton reached Championship Play-Off final

Crystal Palace will benefit financially after Southampton joined Leeds in the Championship Play-Off final.

The Saints defeated West Brom 3-1 on Friday to secure their spot at Wembley,

while Leeds secured a shot at an immediate return to the Premier League with a 4-0 victory over Norwich on Thursday.

So, why will Crystal Palace receive millions of pounds? Let us have a look.

Crystal Palace ready to bank nearly £5 million.

Surprisingly, it is linked to parachute payments.

Given that two of the three demoted sides, along with Ipswich,

will almost certainly return to Premier League football next season, the Premier League has saved £103 million in parachute payments.

Instead of pocketing this money, the Premier League will share it evenly across all 20 clubs involved in the 2024/25 season,

with each side due to get £5.15 million shortly.

That’s according to Nathan Judah of The Express and Star.

Of course, this is a relatively minor sum of money for a Premier League club today.

For example, if Crystal Palace complete the season in 12th place on Sunday, they will earn £28 million.

However, as the Premier League tightens its Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR), deducting points from Everton and Nottingham Forest this season for violations,

this £5.15 million could provide greater wiggle room in the summer transfer window, at the very least.

Steve Parish will be satisfied.

Depending on how things go in the summer, this £5.15 million might mean the difference between us needing to sell or not.

To provide some context, Nottingham Forest were docked four points this season after exceeding their allowable losses by £34.5 million –

but it would have still been a violation of the regulations if the sum had been only £2 million, for example.

As a result, this welcome injection of cash could mean the difference between selling a vital player this summer and not – only time will tell.
