‘That’s a good fee for him’: Sunderland to cash in on wanted player amid £20m rumours

Gary Bennett, a BBC pundit and former Sunderland defender, has urged the club to sell one of its players if a £12 million offer is made.

Sunderland enters a vital summer transfer window with numerous players attracting transfer interest, potentially with large fees.

Jack Clarke and Anthony Patterson are now in the transfer news, with both players desired by other clubs.

Clarke could earn the Black Cats up to £20 million after his exceptional 2023/24 season.

Patterson, meanwhile, is linked with an £8 million transfer to Sheffield United.

Other names may come into the conversation for a summer move,

but Marco Gabbiadini has urged Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus to limit player sales to just two  who’d fetch the highest amount of money.

Jobe Bellingham has also recently made headlines as a reported target for Borussia Dortmund ahead of the summer transfer window.

Gary Bennett’s thoughts on Jobe Bellingham’s potential transfer to Sunderland

Bennett spoke with Total Sport about Bellingham and claimed interest from Borussia Dortmund.

Sunderland is reportedly said to be asking for £12 million for Bellingham this summer,

having paid £3 million to sign him from Birmingham City the previous year.

Bennett believes £12 million is a reasonable sum for the 18-year-old, stating,

“If they’re offering something in the region of £12 million, I think that’s a good fee for him.”

Bennett then gives the example of Adam Wharton,

a 20-year-old midfielder who joined Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers for £18 million earlier this year.

Wharton has subsequently received great accolades,

with Bayern Munich apparently considering a £60 million summer transfer for the Englishman.

Bennett continued, “Look at the boy that went to Palace, Wharton; he went for £18 million. He’s a good player worth £18 million.

“You’ve just got to look at the two players and think, 18, 12, I think it would be good business.”

Sunderland should impose a fee for Jobe Bellingham

Bellingham’s first season at Sunderland has been very successful, with seven goals in 45 Championship appearances.

So much first-team experience will undoubtedly prepare him to be more productive and vital next season,

and by the end of it, he might be worth £20 million.

We saw the same with Clarke,

who was linked with a £10 million move to Burnley last summer but may now join a big European club for £20 million this summer.

So, for Sunderland, keeping Bellingham for another season may be the wisest option.

However, £12 million may be difficult to pass down, especially for a player who cost only £3 million last summer.

Sunderland is expected to cash in on one or two players this summer, but who they choose remains to be seen.

On social media, there is rising suspicion that Clarke may stay, and if so, Bellingham may be sold.

If Dortmund or any other team makes a £12 million approach, Sunderland, Kristjaan Speakman,

and Louis-Dreyfus will have something to ponder about.
