When it came to Graeme Souness‘ assessment of the disparity in talent between Rangers and Celtic,

Martin O’Neill and the man were at odds.

This week, Souness hinted that there isn’t much separating the two teams,

with close Old Firms ultimately choosing who goes to the top.

However, following the 2-1 defeat at Parkhead, O’Neill maintains that

this Gers lineup is the worst he has seen in a long time, criticizing John Lundstram in particular.

“I believe a gap exists,” he stated on talkSPORT [May 17, 10:05 a.m.].

I apologize, but I need to argue with Graeme about this.

“Rangers were extremely, extremely awful the other day in a game that held great significance for them.

By half-time, [Celtic] might have been lost from view.

[John] Lundstram sends himself off for an utterly absurd challenge. In my opinion,

that is the worst Rangers team I have seen in a long time.

This Rangers team would have lost against the team from 2000–01 by a score of roughly 6-0.

“I firmly believe that a real difference exists; there is no doubt about it.

I believe that at this moment, a gap is really evident.

Rangers also need to take action in this regard. It’s that simple: Rangers need better players.

Rangers will have a busy summer transfer window.

The point Souness is expressing is clear to you. If Old Firm results had not been included in the calculation,

the teams would have been tied on points. But that would be following the path of “if my auntie had wheels.

” Who wins the title will always be greatly influenced by the games played between the teams.

Having said that, Rangers have been superior to Celtic,

or at least comparable, ever since Michael Beale was replaced by Philippe Clement.

Even while the gap between the two teams is not as great as O’Neill suggests,

it is reasonable to argue that Clement will require the addition of at least a few more elite players in the summer.

It may be easier said than done to find them,

but as soon as the Scottish Cup final whistle blows, attention will already start to shift there.
