There are numerous views over whether Sunderland should have hired a new head coach by now.

One is the assumption that a new guy may assist with talks for new players while also attempting to retain existing ones.

After all, players want to know which manager they’re playing for, right? Is it not part of the agreement these days?

As long as they get their contract and the agent gets his cut, it may not matter which man is in charge.

In addition, owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and sports director Kristjaan Speakman handle all of the club’s negotiations.

For them, finding the proper man is the most important thing.

The concern is if they can schedule the correct appointment.

I mean, they brought in Michael Beale,

who was a disaster, and then opted to put a novice in charge,

enabling the club to slide away to six points above the relegation zone by the end.

When Beale left, the club was only a few points away from the playoffs.

Some fans claim it was the worst season they’ve seen in a long.

However, the situation could have been much worse.

It should not be forgotten that Sunderland spent four years in League One; surely a mediocre season in the Championship surpasses that?

Promotion and relegation campaigns have been the norm, so there has been plenty of excitement in one form or another.

And last season wasn’t utterly flat, especially early on and even while Beale was in command.

At least they won a few games under him, but Dodds’ record was dismal,

with the squad scoring just one goal in their last six home games.

It’s no surprise that the supporters were disappointed, and this is the type of number that sticks with you.

Sunderland’s failure to recruit a known striker was a major mistake,

and it will be intriguing to watch how that is handled in the summer transfer window.

There will be fans who anticipate everything to fall into place and are content to wait for a new head coach appointment.

With so much talk going on, it may be best to wait and see what the club does before casting judgement.

None of us will know if the club has hired another Dodds until the team plays, because outcomes are all that matters.
