Alan Nixon has provided a new report on the Sunderland management competition.

Sunderland are reaching the three-month mark since Michael Beale’s dismissal, and there is still no clear front-runner for the post.

Mike Dodds’ interim term has ended, and he leaves Sunderland in a sad situation, having finished 16th in the Championship.

In the end, the Black Cats finished the season barely six points above the drop zone, having won five games since the turn of the year.

Will Still, Danny Rohl, Rene Maric, and Paul Heckingbottom are among the names associated with the Sunderland post,

with Bo Svensson emerging as a fresh candidate.

Though some names appear to be ahead of others, Nixon has now provided a fairly ambiguous update on the situation.

Alan Nixon releases Sunderland manager update.

In a post on X, journalist Nixon said that he had ‘heard something’ that suggests there may be’more than one applicant’ for the Sunderland job this summer.

As things stand, Still appears to be the clear front-runner, having departed Reims at the beginning of May,

whereas Maric and Rohl’s links to Sunderland have lessened in the last week.

Heckingbottom’s name has recently returned to the headlines, as has Svensson’s,

so it appears that Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is considering a number of choices at the moment.

One big fear looming in Sunderland’s manager competition

To get to this position, three months after Beale’s departure and two weeks since the season’s end,

with no front-runner, implies that Sunderland has no idea what they want in their new manager.

The criteria mentioned in the media were ill-defined; fans have often heard that Sunderland wants a younger coach,

most likely from Europe, yet there were also suggestions that Heckingbottom was the club’s top option.

It appears that whoever Sunderland appoints as their next manager will come as a surprise,

even if it is someone like Still, whose ties to Wearside have cooled slightly.

But if Nixon’s update tells us anything, it’s that the club isn’t close to selecting a new manager,

which will upset Sunderland fans who want to see the club move forward with summer transfers and pre-season while a manager is in place.

And there may be fresh names in the running to be Sunderland’s next manager, as Svensson’s previous links indicate that Sunderland may have a wide net.
