The SFA’s latest appointment will provoke a strong reaction as Celtic and Scottish football look for improvement
As the dust settles on the Celtic Park Glasgow Derby and the discussion over some decisions made by VAR and Willie Collum continues, the SFA has just announced a successor to the current Head of Referees, Crawford Allan.
Almost two years ago, Allan managed the introduction of VAR in Scotland and has over thirty years of experience with the SFA.
As Celtic and Rangers engaged in a fiercely contested race for the championship,
the contentious officiating technology has been making headlines this season.
Since VAR’s inception, Celtic has seen numerous injustices and witnessed contentious calls directly impact games such as the 2-0 loss to Hearts at Tynecastle.
has named his replacement, which is expected to incite heated feelings among Scottish footballers.
Willie Collum is appointed Head of Referees by SFA
The Scottish FA Chief Executive, Ian Maxwell, stated in a statement issued this morning,
“We received applications from experienced candidates across the UK, Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia.”
“Willie deserves a great deal of credit for coming out on top in such a competitive international field.”
Today’s appointment is sure to spark debate, especially from the Rangers camp.
Given that the Ibrox club filed an official complaint about Collum to the national association back in 2018,
it is evident that the club does not think much of him. [Sky Sports]
They took issue with Collum’s decision to substitute Daniel Candeias during Ibrox’s 2-0 victory over St. Mirren.
Because of the Ibrox club’s dissatisfaction with the previous referee,
Rangers was actually going to ask the SFA to forgo assigning Collum to any of the team’s upcoming games,
as current manager Philippe Clement acknowledged back in February of this year. [The Herald]
We have spoke about how it would have been a good move for the SFA to consider former English Premier League referee John Moss.
It would have been far more difficult to refute claims of an SFA clique if someone outside the national organization had been in charge,
and Moss’s appointment would have been seen as a welcome change for the Scottish game.
As I mentioned before, there will probably be criticism surrounding this decision,
but all we can do is wait and see if Collum’s hiring raises the bar for VAR and refereeing in the Scottish game.
