‘I think the best fit for him…’: Attacker urged to snub Sunderland and join Championship rivals instead

A Sunderland transfer target has been persuaded to reject the Black Cats and join another Championship club instead.

Sunderland are ratcheting up their summer transfer plans, with a number of new names on their radar and a number of players expected to leave.

Chris Willock has been linked with a summer move to the Stadium of Light,

while goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is heavily connected with a move to Sheffield United.

However, fans will be focusing on Kristjaan Speakman and the players he can bring in this summer.

There are several spots that require improvement, but fans want to see some quality in the last third.

It comes after another season without an out-and-out striker,

with Jack Clarke’s likely summer departure exacerbating the team’s persistent lack of firepower.

Along with Willock, another potentially savvy attacking addition has been connected this summer: Ian Poveda, who is poised to become a free agent.

However, the Colombian international has been persuaded to reject a potential move to Wearside this summer.

Ian Poveda urged to avoid Sunderland

Poveda, 24, will see his Leeds United contract expire this summer,

and recent reports have linked him with Sunderland, Burnley, Luton Town, and a return to Sheffield Wednesday.

It follows a successful loan spell with the Owls in the second half of the 2023/24 season,

during which Poveda appeared 10 times in the Championship and provided one assist.

Wednesday are anxious to bring him back, and former Owls player and pundit Carlton Palmer has urged Poveda to return to Hillsborough this summer.

Palmer told Football League World that Burnley and Luton will be in the Championship next season,

as will Sunderland. I believe he is best suited to his current situation at Sheffield Wednesday.

“Join a club that you enjoy; he has become a fan favourite.

Join a club where you may play regular football and enjoy it, as well as play for the management.

Palmer continued: “I think still the best fit for him is joining Sheffield Wednesday where he spent the second half of the season on loan and excelled.”

Sunderland could avoid a bullet with Ian Poveda’s move.

There’s no denying Poveda’s cleverness and influence in the final third;

we witnessed at Sheffield Wednesday his ability to really hammer opponents and cause them problems when he has the ball at his feet,

and it’s no surprise to see this type of creative play emerging.

However, Poveda has one big flaw: he is prone to injuries;

he missed the final five games of the season for Wednesday due to a reoccurring muscle problem,

and he has only made 25 league matches for Leeds United in five seasons.

This is also due to loan moves away from Elland Road, yet despite loan spells with Blackburn Rovers,

Blackpool, and Wednesday, Poveda only made 44 league games.

So, for a Sunderland team that has already been plagued by injuries over the last two years,

adding another injury-prone player to the mix doesn’t seem like a good decision, no matter how excellent Poveda is on his day.

Speakman has to bring in players who can last the entire campaign while also adding much-needed talent ahead of another challenging Championship season.
