Liam Kelly singles out the ‘well-liked’ Coventry City player to succeed him as captain

Liam Kelly expressed his opinion on who he believes should be Coventry City’s captain for the upcoming campaign.

After serving as club captain since February 2019 after Michael Doyle’s mid-term move to Notts County, the departing Sky Blues captain is leaving the team after seven significant and unforgettable years. Since then, a number of players have replaced Kelly when he was unable to play due to illness, injury, or not being picked, with Kyle McFadzean serving as the “go to” player in his place.

But since he left the team in November of last year and moved to Blackburn Rovers in January, manager Mark Robins has mostly relied on Ben Sheaf to shoulder the load.

Joel Latibeaudiere, Matty Godden, and Jamie Allen are among the players who led the team out the previous season. After substitutes, Jake Bidwell, Callum O’Hare, and Josh Eccles also assumed the armband.

Kelly responded, “Yes, definitely,” when asked if he thought Sheaf, who is 26 years old, would be the ideal and natural successor to himself. Ben is a highly experienced player who has been with the team for a few seasons. He has shown great performance on the field and is well-liked in the locker room.

However, the seasoned midfield player, who was let go after his contract expired this summer, maintains that it’s not a done deal and that Robins has a variety of choices for the job.

“There are a lot of experienced players in there. Joel Latibeaudiere is a young player with a lot of experience, and Jake Bidwell is a head coach with a lot of experience, so there are a lot of leaders in that dressing room.”

“But yes, Ben has performed admirably in his captaincy roles.”
