JUST IN: Man Utd ‘make contact’ with exciting Championship boss to replace Erik ten Hag
Plans for Manchester United’s head coach Erik ten Hag’s replacement have already begun.
The agents of Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna have apparently been in preliminary touch
with Manchester United regarding the likelihood of McKenna taking Erik ten Hag’s place at
Old Trafford. After receiving back-to-back promotions, McKenna departed the Red Devils in
2021 to take up his first League One head coaching position with Ipswich, where he helped lead
them to the Premier League. According to Foot Mercato, McKenna’s agency and the new INEOS administration have
had their first real conversations. Ten Hag’s employment is in jeopardy before of the FA Cup final matchup
with Manchester City.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and associates are also considering England manager Gareth Southgate, but he has downplayed rumours of leaving before Euro 2024, making McKenna a more desirable alternative
who could start right away.
Should Ten Hag be fired, United wants a new head coach in place well in advance of the season. McKenna’s resume has impressed the club’s new decision-makers, and they are particularly drawn
to his profile.
After moving from Tottenham to United in 2016, McKenna took over as manager of the Under-18
squad. Two years later, he and Michael Carrick were elevated to the first team staff.
After Jose Mourinho fired Rui Faria, he was kept on as the Portuguese coach’s assistant. He later collaborated with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick before moving to Ipswich.
After finishing in second place during their first season back in the Championship, United issued a sophisticated letter congratulating McKenna and Ipswich on their recent promotion.
A press article on the club website stated, “Masterminding back-to-back promotions with Ipswich
as a manager represents a remarkable achievement for McKenna.”
