Sunderland attacker Nazariy Rusyn is attracting interest from clubs in his home Ukraine, according to Sport Arena.

Last summer, Sunderland recruited Rusyn on a permanent basis from Ukrainian club Zorya Lugansk in order to improve their attacking ranks.

The 25-year-old struggled in his first season on Wearside, scoring two goals and assisting once in 22 senior appearances.

In addition, a calf injury cut short his season.

The hope is that Rusyn can kick on when the new season begins, as the Black Cats continue to seek for a new talisman.

However, interest from back home in Ukraine may mean that his stay at the Stadium of Light comes to an end early.

Ukrainian news outlet Sport Arena reports that a number of the country’s top flight clubs are keen on the Sunderland man.

Newly-promoted side Karpaty Lviv are among those keen in a potential loan-to-buy deal.

Time will tell if anything comes of the links, but Rusyn is still under contract until 2027.

An big season awaits.

Since the end of the 2023/24 season, Sunderland interim manager Mike Dodds has commented about Rusyn’s importance in the coming season.

Dodds acknowledged some of his off-pitch issues and indicated that there is some pressure on him to perform.

He’s optimistic he’ll be able to do so, but with off-field issues handled, the goal is that he’ll be ready to go when the next season begins.

“I think from the start of next season,” Dodds stated. “Pre-season is going to be really significant for him because I believe the factors we’ve been discussing have been eliminated.

“His family is here with him, his language has improved significantly, he is more settled in the region, and he has a home.

So, there will be a little more pressure on him, but I believe we will get a more accurate reflection of him as a player.

A proposal about Sunderland’s stance?

Dodds will not be in charge next season, and the final decision on Rusyn’s summer transfer fate will be primarily determined by the next manager’s ideas.

However, after signing him to a long-term contract for a monetary amount last summer,

you have to believe the club will give him an opportunity to show himself next season.

Keeping those off-pitch elements in mind, the goal is that he can really kick on and prove himself on Wearside.

As a result, his departure may come as a surprise, particularly if the contract includes a permanent transfer option.

It remains to be seen how the situation plays out,

but offloading Rusyn only a year after a difficult first season with the club would undoubtedly raise concerns among fans.
