Following their Premier League tie with Liverpool, Aston Villa will have to wait until next season to qualify for the Champions League.

Unai Emery’s team drew 3-3 at Villa Park on Monday (13 May), thanks to a late brace from second-half replacement Jhon Duran,

who cancelled out Emi Martinez’s disastrous own goal.

While Martinez’s error was possibly the worst made by anyone in Villa colours,

Gary Neville was quick to criticise Diego Carlos for his “unbelievable” miss in the first half, which would have levelled the game.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (13 May, 21:05), he said: “Oh my gosh, do you know what,

it’s a big miss, it’s a shocker but he  actually nudges Watkins out of the way.

“Watch him on the way in; it’s fantastic. He moves him out of the way with his left arm.”

Have Aston Villa and Unai Emery qualified for the Champions League?

It was more difficult for Carlos to miss the opportunity than it would have been to score it.

According to Fotmob, the 31-year-old’s effort had an xG of 0.99, indicating that he would only miss that opportunity once in 100 efforts.

That miss summed up the Villa defender’s performance at Villa Park, as he struggled to make an impact.

He completed 93% of his 54 attempted passes, but only five of them found a teammate in the final third.

Carlos was even less consistent when it came to long-range passing,

finding a teammate in claret and blue with only half of his six attempts in a slightly risky display.

However, it was when he was not in control that the 31-year-old appeared to be completely lost.

The Brazilian did not enter a single tackle during the game and only recovered three balls.

Furthermore, the Villa player lost all six ground duels, committing four fouls in the process,

as he continually failed to control the likes of Luiz Diaz, Gakpo, and Mohammed Salah as they charged towards goal.

Carlos was equally as ineffective in the air, winning only 33% of his three aerial encounters.

Although Liverpool’s assault is rife with talented players, it is inexcusable to see the centre-back appear useless in such a crucial game.

As previously said in the build-up to the game, the 31-year-old is one of many Villa center-backs who struggle in the air.

According to Fbref, he ranks eighth among his Premier League positional contemporaries in terms of aerials won per game, with an average of 45.5%.

The Brazilian also tends to make more mistakes that lead to goals than most of the division’s centre-backs,

as he sits in the bottom five percent of errors leading to goals per 90 minutes.

When he’s good he can be excellent, but he makes big mistakes far too often.

Will Unai Emery drop Diego Carlos for the Premier League showdown against Crystal Palace?

Had Carlos scored in the first half, Villa would have won all three points and secured their position in the Premier League courtesy to Duran’s late goals.

If Tottenham manages to defeat Manchester City, that miss might haunt Emery’s team.

With Clement Lenglet watching from the bench and even Calum Chambers returning from the bench,

it may be worthwhile to remove Carlos from the firing line in order to maintain their position in the top four.
