MANCHESTER UNITED is prepared to launch a formal bid for Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg, s

etting up a fierce competition for the player.

One of the main stories on Wearside this summer will be about Rigg’s future;

the Black Cats are aiming to convince the 16-year-old to accept a professional contract at the Stadium of Light.

Although Rigg committed to a two-year scholarship with Sunderland last summer,

he is not allowed to sign a professional contract until after turning 17 on June 18.

When they approved the scholarship arrangement, Sunderland authorities reportedly spoke with Rigg and his advisors about the possible terms of a professional contract.

They are optimistic that the Hebburn teenager will choose to stay on Wearside.

In the last month of the season, he was a fixture in the first team under Mike Dodds,

having made 13 substitute appearances in addition to eight Championship starts.

The Sunderland administration is hopeful that this good start to his career will convince him to dedicate the majority of it to the Black Cats.

Over the past 12 months, a number of teams have been keeping an eye on his progress;

Newcastle United and Arsenal, in particular, are rumored to be keen on signing him.

Over the weekend, Rigg was also linked to the German powerhouses Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund as a potential summer transfer.

However, at this point, Manchester United appears to be the team with the strongest move to acquire Rigg,

as the young player is believed to play a significant role in the efforts of the new Old Trafford administration to revamp their academy program

and start challenging teams like Chelsea and Manchester City for the top teenage talent in the country.

There is a desire to make a landmark young signing to signify the intention to modify the transfer method,

as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS firm has successfully taken over the footballing operation of Manchester United and is implementing a number of significant reforms at all levels of the club.

Fitting the bill is Rigg, who represented England at the Under-17 World Cup and has established himself at Championship level despite only being 16 years old.

Over the past few seasons, Manchester United has sent scouts to the majority of Rigg’s games for both Sunderland’s Under-21s and first team.
