The Black Cats have received a huge contract boost after local talent Jessica Brown committed her long-term future to the club.

Brown, who came through Sunderland’s junior system from a young age, signed her first professional contract with the club earlier this week, boosting head coach Mel Reay’s promotion hopes for next season.

Brown, 20, joined Sunderland when she was 11 years old and scored her first home goal against Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light four years ago. The defender has since made 103 appearances for Sunderland, primarily as a right-back.

“I feel like this is absolutely the place for me; I’ve grown so much already. “It’s something I’ve been working on for a long time, and for Mel and Steph to offer me that, it was really nice,” Brown said after signing the contract.

Mel Reay, Sunderland Women’s head coach, said: “I’m happy that Jess has signed a new contract. It follows a successful season in a new role for her, which she mastered. Jess’ consistency belies her youth, and combined with her undeniable talent, she has the proven components for a successful career in both the Women’s game and with Sunderland AFC.”

Sunderland finished third in the Women’s Championship last season, just missing out on promotion to the Women’s Super League in a closely contested race with Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace.
